A tamper is an essential tool for packing espresso grounds into the basket of an espresso machine or stovetop maker. It ensures the grounds are evenly packed to produce the best shot of espresso. How? Use even pressure when using a coffee tamper. Press down flat and firm on the coffee. Don't press too hard, though as too much pressure makes bitter espresso. After tamping, wipe away extra coffee. Remember to always keep the portafilter clean.
